The Safe Agriculture for Farmers in Egypt project will directly address the quality of life and livelihood security of rural poor farmers in Upper Egypt by addressing environmental degradation and inappropriate and damaging natural resource management practices.
The overall objective of SAFE is improved livelihood security of 6,000 poor rural farming households, in the three Upper Egypt Governorates of Fayoum Qena and Sohag through reduction in environmental degradation and improvements in natural resource management.
SAFE intends to do so by promoting agro-ecology practices and supporting advocacy campaigns by small farmers, helping poor rural families to improve the quality and quantity of their food supply and livelihood security, while securing the natural resource base for future generations.
The short-term goal of the project is to promote safe agricultural production to enhance farmers’ livelihood and marketing strategies. SAFE will also enable farmers to safeguard their long-term development capacity by protecting the natural resources available to them. In both cases, support to farmers in mobilization, group formation, and technical information to improve their ability to respond to emerging markets and opportunities, are necessary for their livelihood security.
