Egypt: Support to Agriculture Networks in Egypt (SAN) - EGY054

Overall Objective: The project will contribute to equitable poverty eradication and the achievement of natural resources conservation and sustainable livelihoods of small-scale farmers – both men and women - from the poorest communities in Qena, Sohag and Fayoum.

Support to Agriculture Networks (SAN) is a 30 month project focusing on the critical role played by small-scale farmers, the backbone of Egypt’s agricultural sector, together with local agricultural input traders and governmental officials, in both the implementation and informing of national agricultural and environmental policies. The project aims to improve livelihoods for poor, rural communities, and articulate farmer-centered strategies resulting in sustainable and equitable policies.

SAN consolidates the success of the EC and Austrian Government Agency (ADA) funded Safe Agriculture for Farmers in Egypt (SAFE) project in promoting safe agricultural practices, and in participatory problem solving and collaboration to address critical agricultural and environmental issues with community members and local government representatives.

SAN will focus on institutional strengthening of Agricultural Networks, advocacy, and addressing critical barriers to women’s full participation and leadership in agriculture and advocacy initiatives.  The overall objective of the project is consistent with and contributes to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by: Eradicating poverty, Promoting gender equality and empowering women and Ensuring environmental sustainability.

Specific Objective: Three sustainable Agricultural Networks have a pivotal role in improving their members’ livelihoods (members of Farmer NGOs, local women’s groups and Input Trader associations), by advocating for their rights and influencing agricultural and environmental polices, promoting natural resources conservation and improving marketing opportunities through safe agriculture services and fair trade practices.
