Malawi: Support to Vulnerable Groups to Achieve Food Security Project - MWI033

Overall Objective: To achieve Food Security among the able bodied Vulnerable households in
Kasungu District.

Specific Objective: To improve crop production and increase and diversify income amongst 7881 vulnerable households in Kasungu District by the end of the project.

Expected Results:
ER#1:
7881 HH adopted drought tolerant legumes and cereals crop varieties combined with
improved soil and water management technologies.
ER#2: 150 Village savings and loans groups (VSLGs) established and operating well in target
communities.
ER#3: Strengthened capacity of selected local government and community institutions to
support on-farm activities of the targeted groups.

Location: Malawi,Central Region, Kasungu District, Njomba, Kaomba, and Mwase Traditional
Authorities (TA).

Types of services provided:

  • Introduction and management of Farmer Field Schools
  • seed procurement, improved crop management

Establishment of Local Seed Banks and provision of technical support:

  • Conduct field days, open days, agricultural shows and Rural Seed Fairs to support input procurement and output marketing.
  • Establishment and management of Collective Production & Marketing Groups;
  • Introduce improved soil and water conservation and improvement practices; training on mainstreaming HIV/Aids and gender.
  • Feasibility study to establish Village Savings and Loans Groups (VSLGs); Introduction and management of VSLGs until maturity phase,
  • capacity assessment and Capacity building of existing institutions at local government and community level;
  • Introduction of local accountability mechanisms;
