The operation will take place in four districts of Northern Inhambane province. These are Govuro, Mabote, Inhassoro and Vilankulos. Inhambane as a whole has a moderate to high level of malnutrition, and this has been exacerbated by the recent droughts. The four are chosen for their problems stemming largely from poor water resources.
A minimum of 75,000 rural people will benefit directly from at least 100 rehabilitated water sources and additional 10,000 boys and girls and other community members at school/health centres. Therefore the total number of beneficiaries is 85,000.
Project beneficiaries are vulnerable members of the general population who are unable to maintain resources and assets due to the current drought experienced by country. Their livelihoods have been compromised due to the breakdown of their coping mechanisms and inadequate support from government or other resources, forcing them to be self-reliant.
55% of rural households in Northern Inhambane are poor or very poor. Their widely scattered nature, poor roads and few service centres means that access to basic services such as education, health and particularly water is very limited. Water resources are scarce, especially in limestone areas and provincial coverage of water supply and sanitation is the second lowest in the country. Many households are female headed, the province having the second lowest ratio of men to women. Few farming families reach more than subsistence production and during the present droughts increasing numbers are unable to produce adequate food supplies to last throughout the year.
Operation specific objective: Improved access to protected water and improved sanitation facilities for vulnerable families in Govuro, Mabote, Inhassoro and Vilankulos districts.
