Rwanda: Strengthening Nkundabana Structure (SNS) - RWA084

The Strengthening Nkundabana Structure (SNS) project proposes an innovative approach to empower an existing network of volunteers, referred to as Nkundabana structure, and transform it from an informal grassroots organisation into a formal not-for-profit organisation. The objective of the Nkundabana volunteers is to address basic rights and needs of children living in child-headed households and help them to be economically productive for better livelihood security.

The Nkundabana approach, developed by CARE in Rwanda since 1998, is a model for community-based care for vulnerable children. Adult volunteers have been mobilized from among the communities to provide guidance, to advocate and care for children living in child-headed households.

In order to gradually increase the capacity, responsibility and self-sufficiency of these local volunteer structures, the pilot initiative aims to strengthen and formalize one Nkundabana association and improve its organizational and institutional capacity to the highest extent possible within a period of seven months.

With the objective of enhancing organisational capacities, technical skills and motivation of the volunteers, activities focus on training inputs, strategic planning, fundraising, income generating activities for volunteers and children, as well as activities to involve the broader community.

The SNS project will work with 30 community volunteer mentors (Nkundabana) who are assuming the role of surrogate parents to 150 child headed households (CHH).
