Overall objective: To contribute to the increase of knowledge about and the protection of children’s rights in Timor Leste.
The Haburas Labarik Project aims to help create an enabling environment that ensures that primary school children in Timor Leste are able to understand and access their fundamental human rights. The Project promotes and educates about those rights of children as stipulated by the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Approx. 45% of Timor Leste’s population is under the age of 15.[1] The Project supports an underlying conviction that the development of a strong democracy must be based on a fundamental belief in, and protection of, human rights including those of children.
A development approach that increases the capacity of not only children but also teachers, service providers and government institutions is utilized so that children and their rights are better supported, served and protected. Through a partnership with the Alola Foundation, capacity building and institutional strengthening activities of the project will target pertinent local institutions, organisations and agencies so that children and schools have, in the long term, an effective and responsive network of service providers.
The project has the following specific objective: To provide greater access and exposure to information on children’s rights and the need for the protection of these rights to primary school students, teachers, and women’s groups throughout Timor Leste.
