Following the Tsunami which struck Aceh in December 2004 many international and national organizations including CARE established a presence in Aceh to participate in the reconstruction of Aceh. Aceh was the area worst hit by the Tsunami, this on top of the suffering of the population from the prolonged conflict between GAM and the Indonesian government. The conflict concluded in the signing of a peace agreement in Mid 2005. The effects of the tsunami and conflict had made many young Acehnese with mental health issues, lost motivation, depression and lost direction. These youths were in high need of support programs to work directly with the youths and supporting their integration into formal and informal education, health information and services, life skill knowledge, trainings in order to increase their motivation and participation in the community. CARE International Indonesia with financial assistance from Neighbour In Need ( NIN) has been implementing the Youth Development Project to deliver support to youths in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar since April 2008. The Youth Development Project is a holistic program that combines a skill development component with adolescent health awareness. The core of the Youth Development Project is to provide access to developing life skills and to provide a dynamic forum for youth to access free health information, awareness and advice, counseling, peer support, life skills trainings, language courses, art activities and referral to other services within the community. The project works together with other organizations committed to helping young people build their awareness on health issues. The goal of the project “improvement of 5,000 youth's capacity to cope with developmental task and transition to adult life by May 2009”. The project is increasing based on the youth’s needs to cover four components, which are: - Life skill and Vocational Trainings
- Adolescent Health
- Education and Awareness
- Community Development, Livelihood and Sport Program.
The project has efforts to enhance youth’s capacity (physical, psychological and social) in coping with their transition to adult life which will be more complex and require high responsibilities. Youth Development Project now is implementing various activities to achieve the goal, such as: Life skill and vocational trainings (computer, sewing, mechanic, hospitality, etc), medical checkup service and counselling, courses (English language, Japanese language, music and singing), youth clubs (theatre club, English conversation club), health trainings, radio and TV talk show, community development and livelihood activities, printing and distributing education materials, then planning to support school’s sport program by delivering sport equipments and building sport fields etc. All activities are delivered for free and based on the youth needs. On a regular basis, around 70 youths (both male and female) from Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar visit the youth centre run by the project, it shows their high interest and belongingness to this youth centre. Due to have good relationship with the beneficiaries and based on the achievements that have reached by the youth development project, it has attracted strong interest with good response from the government, International and local NGOs, schools, youth organizations etc. The Youth development project is committed to keep on delivering service for the youths in Aceh, especially for the disadvantage youths.
