Due to interesecting, social, political and economic factors – lack of government accountability, socio-cultural influences, the conflict, and environmental degradation - women (in the Churia region) experience high levels of poverty and social exclusion. Not surprisingly, these women lack skills and opportunities to take actions that will fulfill their rights. CARE Nepal will address these gaps through community led interventions in partnership with local groups and the government.
To this end, CARE’s objective: by 2009 women in the Churia region have enhanced skills and capacities to exercise their rights by addressing the policy and socio-cultural barriers that impede their political, social and economic empowerment and the implementation of UN Resolution 1325. The purpose of the project is to strengthen women’s capacities to protect and claim their basic rights by inclusive management of natural resources for improved livelihoods, enhanced psychosocial wellbeing and increased participation in peace building processes.
Four expected results have been generated, each designed to address the four key elements necessary for social change to take place: livelihood skills development, policy change, community mobilization and learning. Specifically, they include: - ER 1) Women have enhanced competencies and capacities to access, control and manage natural resources for improved livelihoods;
- ER 2) Women claim their rights through supportive peace-building and natural-resource management policies, at local, institutional and national levels;
- ER 3) Women mobilize communities to enhance women’s agency and community support mechanisms, including psycho-social wellbeing;
- ER 4) In collaboration with partners and communities, CARE documents and disseminates lessons learned in relation to women’s rights attainment.
Activities will focus on using action research methods to mobilize natural resource management groups facilitated by local resource persons.
