The overall objective of the proposed project is to address the psycho-social needs of 13,500 children, adolescents and women in temporary shelters and in affected communities in the departments of Santa Ana, Sonsonate and Usulután and marginal urban areas of San Salvador. Specifically, the project seeks to: - Address symptoms and consequences of stress among children, adolescents and women, as well as of other vulnerable groups.
- Protect children’s psychological, social and cognitive development by ensuring that they are taken care of by people which they know and trust, and by restoring their normal development.
- Support communities in re-establishing an environment which is favourable for children’s psycho-social development – allowing ample space for recognizing and processing the losses, but also for building hope for the future ahead.
- Promote family and community cohesion and solidarity in shelters and affected communities.
- Strengthen the capacity of families and communities to provide care and support for the psycho-social well-being of children and adolescents.
- Bridge the gap of lost school time through play and pedagogical therapy (oral story telling, transcribing and illustrating oral stories, games to build math and reading skills).
At its core, the project is based on the belief that children, young people and women are key actors for the development of any community, and – given their vulnerability – need special attention for protecting and promoting their needs and rights.
